What was the name of the peace treaty that ended the war?

The story behind the answer

The peace treaty that ended the War of 1812 was the Treaty of Ghent.

American and British negotiators signed the treaty on December 24, 1814, in Ghent, a city in the United Netherlands now located in Belgium. The agreement restored relations largely to their prewar condition, returning captured territory and prisoners rather than awarding major new land to either side.

The treaty did not immediately stop every battle. Formal ratification took time, and news traveled slowly across the Atlantic. The Battle of New Orleans was fought on January 8, 1815, after the treaty had been signed but before American commanders knew about it. The United States ratified the agreement in February 1815, officially ending the conflict.

A common mix-up is the Treaty of Paris, which ended the American Revolutionary War, or the Treaty of Versailles, associated with the end of World War I. The Treaty of Ghent settled the War of 1812 without resolving every issue that had helped cause it, including maritime disputes and impressment.
