What was the name of the Oxford college where J.R.R. Tolkien studied?
Answer
Exeter College
Answer
Exeter College
J.R.R. Tolkien studied at Exeter College, Oxford.
Tolkien entered Exeter College in 1911 and initially studied Classics. He later changed direction toward the English language and literature, a field that suited his growing interest in historical languages and medieval texts. He completed his degree after serving in the First World War and achieved first-class honours in English Language and Literature in 1915.
Exeter College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford. Founded in 1314, it has a long association with the study of the humanities. Tolkien’s time there helped establish the academic foundation for his later work as a philologist and literary scholar.
Tolkien is often linked with Pembroke College and Merton College because he later taught at both. Pembroke was where he held his first Oxford professorship, while Merton was his later Oxford college. Neither was the college where he began his undergraduate studies.
