What was the name of the Ottoman naval arsenal in Istanbul?
Answer
Tersane-i Amire
Answer
Tersane-i Amire
The Ottoman naval arsenal in Istanbul was Tersane-i Amire, the empire’s principal shipyard and naval base on the Golden Horn.
Its origins are usually traced to 1454, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, when shipbuilding facilities were developed along the Golden Horn. The arsenal expanded greatly during the sixteenth century as Ottoman naval power grew under sultans such as Selim I and Süleyman I.
Tersane-i Amire built, repaired, and supplied warships, while also employing large numbers of sailors, craftsmen, and administrators. The word tersane derives from Italian darsena, ultimately related to Arabic dar al-sina'a, meaning a house or workplace of manufacture.
A common mix-up is confusing the Imperial Arsenal with later Haliç shipyards. Haliç refers to the Golden Horn location and later civilian facilities, whereas Tersane-i Amire was the Ottoman imperial institution and naval shipyard.
