Tecumseh's confederacy
What was the name of the Native American confederation led by Tecumseh? It was known as Tecumseh’s confederacy.
The confederacy was an intertribal alliance formed in the Great Lakes region and the Old Northwest during the early 19th century. Tecumseh worked to unite Indigenous nations against the continuing seizure of their lands by the United States.
Its roots were closely connected to Prophetstown and to the religious movement led by Tecumseh’s brother, Tenskwatawa, often called the Prophet. The alliance included followers from several nations, including Shawnee, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Kickapoo, and others; it was not simply a Shawnee organization.
The confederacy allied with Britain during the War of 1812 and participated in fighting against the United States. Tecumseh was killed at the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813, after which the confederacy soon dissolved as an organized force. The Iroquois and Creek confederacies were separate political alliances.
