McDonald’s introduced Speedee as its original mascot in 1948, portraying a hamburger-headed chef.
Speedee represented the restaurant’s “Speedee Service System,” the McDonald brothers’ early method for preparing food quickly and consistently. The mascot’s name echoed the business’s emphasis on speed, years before the familiar Golden Arches became the dominant visual symbol.
Speedee is often confused with later McDonald’s characters, especially Ronald McDonald and the Hamburglar. Ronald arrived in the early 1960s, while the Hamburglar became part of the broader McDonaldland cast. Speedee gradually disappeared from mainstream advertising as the arches and character campaigns took over the brand’s identity.
