What was the name of the jazz club where Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie developed bebop in New York?

The story behind the answer

Minton’s Playhouse was the New York jazz club where Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie helped develop bebop. Located in Harlem, the club became an important late-night meeting place for musicians during the early 1940s. Its informal jam sessions encouraged players to experiment with fast tempos, complex harmonies, and intricate melodies.

The club was founded in 1938 by saxophonist Henry Minton, a former musicians’ union official. The house band and visiting musicians included figures such as Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, Charlie Christian, Parker, and Gillespie. Their experiments formed part of the musical transition from swing-era dance music to modern jazz designed more for listening.

Minton’s Playhouse is sometimes confused with Birdland, another famous New York jazz venue. Birdland opened later, in 1949, and became strongly associated with bebop and Charlie Parker’s nickname, “Bird.” Minton’s was the earlier incubator for the style’s development.
