The imaginary kingdom created by Charlotte and Branwell was Angria. It grew from the Brontë children’s elaborate childhood games with toy soldiers, miniature books, maps, histories, and political dramas.
The earliest shared setting was the Glass Town Confederacy, begun around 1827 by Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne. Charlotte and Branwell later developed a new kingdom called Angria, while Emily and Anne created their separate world of Gondal. Angria became the main setting for Charlotte and Branwell’s later juvenilia.
Branwell concentrated on wars, government, geography, and political history; Charlotte focused more on powerful personalities, romances, and aristocratic intrigue. Their central figures included Charlotte’s Arthur Wellesley, later transformed into the Duke of Zamorna, and Branwell’s Alexander Percy, later known as Northangerland.
A common mix-up is choosing Glass Town or Verdopolis. Glass Town was the earlier federation and Verdopolis its principal city; Angria was the later kingdom associated especially with Charlotte and Branwell.
