The friendship group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis was called the Inklings.
The Inklings were an informal literary discussion group associated with Oxford. Members met regularly, especially at The Eagle and Child pub, known to them as the Bird and Baby, and sometimes in college rooms.
Tolkien and Lewis read portions of their developing works to one another and to other members. Lewis’s support encouraged Tolkien during the long process of writing The Lord of the Rings, while Tolkien influenced Lewis’s interest in myth and imaginative literature.
The Inklings were not a formal society with a fixed membership or constitution. Writers such as Charles Williams and Owen Barfield were also associated with the group, although attendance varied over time.
