Osman I
Answer
Osman I
What was the name of the founder of the Ottoman dynasty? The founder was Osman I, also known as Osman Ghazi or Osman Bey.
Osman ruled a small Turkoman principality in northwestern Anatolia around the turn of the fourteenth century. His beylik occupied a frontier zone near the Byzantine Empire, where raids, alliances, migration, and military expansion helped it grow. The state was later named the Ottoman Empire after Osman’s name, rendered as “Ottoman” in English.
Osman’s father is traditionally identified as Ertuğrul, and Ottoman tradition connects the family with the Kayı branch of the Oghuz Turks. Some details of Osman’s early life and reign are difficult to establish because surviving contemporary sources are limited, while later Ottoman chronicles combine history with legend.
Osman is often called the first Ottoman sultan, but during his lifetime he was more commonly known as a bey or emir. His son Orhan succeeded him and expanded the emerging state substantially. The dynasty Osman founded eventually produced 36 sultans and ruled until the sultanate was abolished in 1922.
