What was the name of the first watch worn on the Moon during Apollo 11?
Answer
Omega Speedmaster
Answer
Omega Speedmaster
The Omega Speedmaster was the first watch worn on the Moon during Apollo 11.
NASA had qualified the Omega Speedmaster for crewed space missions before Apollo 11, and astronaut Buzz Aldrin wore his Speedmaster Professional on the lunar surface in July 1969. Neil Armstrong left his watch inside the lunar module because the module’s electronic timing system had failed, so Aldrin’s became the first watch worn on the Moon.
The Speedmaster was selected after testing watches for severe conditions including shocks, vibration, extreme temperatures and pressure changes. Its manually wound chronograph and highly legible dial suited both mission timing and cockpit use. The model later acquired the nickname “Moonwatch.”
The result is sometimes described imprecisely as the first watch “on the Moon,” without noting that only Aldrin’s was worn outside the module during the first landing. Omega’s space association continued through later Apollo missions and other NASA activities.
