What was the name of the first commercial home video game console, released by Magnavox in 1972?

The story behind the answer

The Magnavox Odyssey was the first commercial home video game console, released in 1972.

Ralph H. Baer and his colleagues developed the system at Sanders Associates before Magnavox brought it to market. The Odyssey connected to a television and included detachable controllers, but it did not generate score or color graphics by itself. Several games used transparent plastic overlays placed on the television screen to add visual backgrounds.

The Odyssey is often confused with the Atari 2600 because the latter became far more successful and influential. The Odyssey came earlier, however, and established the basic idea of playing interchangeable electronic games at home. Magnavox also promoted an Odyssey version of table tennis before Atari released Pong.
