What was the name of the fictional world created by C.S. Lewis and his brother Warren during their childhood?

The story behind the answer

Boxen was the fictional world created by C.S. Lewis and his brother Warren during their childhood. The brothers developed stories, maps, histories, and illustrations for this imaginary land while growing up in Belfast.

Their early imaginative work combined two invented settings, Animal-Land and India. The resulting world featured anthropomorphic animals, political events, and an elaborate internal history. Lewis and Warren recorded parts of it in handwritten notebooks, showing how seriously they treated their private mythology.

Boxen is not the same fictional setting as Narnia. Narnia was created for Lewis’s later children’s fantasy series, The Chronicles of Narnia, which began with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in 1950. Boxen belongs to the brothers’ childhood creative experiments and was not published as a major finished series during Lewis’s lifetime.

The material is valuable to biographers because it reveals Lewis’s early fascination with invented worlds, narrative history, and animal characters. It also shows that his imaginative habits began long before the publication of his adult fiction.
