What was the name of the fictional evil power whose fortress was Angband in J.R.R. Tolkien’s First Age mythology?

The story behind the answer

Morgoth was the fictional evil power whose fortress was Angband in J.R.R. Tolkien’s First Age mythology.

Morgoth, originally named Melkor, is the chief enemy of the stories told in The Silmarillion. He rebels against Ilúvatar’s creation and seeks domination over Arda. Angband becomes his great northern fortress, from which he wages war against the Elves, Men, and the Valar.

Morgoth is an earlier and more powerful figure than Sauron. Sauron begins as one of Morgoth’s servants and later becomes the principal enemy of the Second and Third Ages. This relationship is a frequent source of confusion because Sauron is the central villain of The Lord of the Rings, while Morgoth dominates the older history behind that trilogy.

The name Morgoth means “Black Foe of the World” in Sindarin. The name was given to Melkor by the Noldor after he stole the Silmarils and committed destructive acts against the Elves.
