Gwaihir was the eagle that rescued Gandalf from Isengard in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. He is described as the Windlord and is the greatest of the Great Eagles who appear in the story.
Gwaihir carried Gandalf away from the summit of Orthanc after Saruman imprisoned him there. Later, Gwaihir and other Great Eagles helped rescue Gandalf and his companions after the Battle of the Morannon, carrying the exhausted Ring-bearers away from Mount Doom.
Gwaihir is sometimes confused with Thorondor, the greatest eagle of the First Age, or with Landroval, another Great Eagle. These figures belong to the same broader tradition of immense, intelligent Eagles, but they are distinct characters.
