What was the name of the dog in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story Roverandom?

The story behind the answer

The dog in J.R.R. Tolkien’s story Roverandom is named Rover.

Roverandom began as a story Tolkien told his children after a beach holiday in 1925. A toy dog belonging to his son Michael had been lost, and Tolkien invented an explanation for its disappearance. In the story, Rover is a small dog transformed into a toy by a wizard after biting him.

Rover then travels through imaginative settings including the Moon and the sea, meeting figures such as the Man-in-the-Moon and the great dragon in the Moon. Tolkien developed the manuscript during the 1920s, but it was not published during his lifetime.

The name Roverandom refers to the complete story, while Rover is the character’s name. The work was published posthumously in 1998, edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond.
