What was the name of the Brontës' brother?

The story behind the answer

The Brontës’ brother was Branwell Brontë, formally named Patrick Branwell Brontë.

Born on 26 June 1817, Branwell was the only son of Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell and the brother of Charlotte, Emily and Anne. The family also included two older daughters, Maria and Elizabeth, who died during childhood. Branwell and his sisters grew up together at the Haworth parsonage, creating elaborate imaginary worlds such as Glass Town and Angria.

Branwell was educated at home by his father and showed interests in poetry, classical languages and art. He worked as a portrait painter and tutor, but his adult life was troubled by unstable employment, alcohol dependence and opium addiction. He died at Haworth in 1848, aged 31, probably from tuberculosis complicated by his addictions.

Arthur Bell Nicholls was not a Brontë sibling; he was Charlotte’s husband. Patrick Brontë was Branwell’s father, while William Brontë is not a member of the immediate Brontë family.
