What was the name of the abandoned sequel J.R.R. Tolkien began after The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

The New Shadow was the abandoned sequel J.R.R. Tolkien began after The Lord of the Rings.

Tolkien started The New Shadow after completing The Lord of the Rings, setting the story during the reign of Eldarion, son of Aragorn and Arwen. The surviving opening takes place in Gondor during the Fourth Age, when a new generation is becoming fascinated by secret societies and dark traditions associated with the defeated enemy.

Tolkien abandoned the project after writing only a small amount. He felt that the proposed story would become too much like a political thriller and lacked the mythic depth of the earlier ages. The fragment was published in Christopher Tolkien’s 12-volume history of the legendarium, The History of Middle-earth, specifically in volume 12, The Peoples of Middle-earth.
