Battle of Rouvray
Answer
Battle of Rouvray
The Battle of the Herrings was the 1429 Battle of Rouvray.
It was fought on 12 February 1429 near Rouvray, north of Orléans, during the English siege of the city. The English convoy was carrying supplies, including salted herring for the soldiers’ Lenten rations, which gave the engagement its better-known name.
French and Scottish forces attempted to intercept the convoy, but the English defenders formed a strong defensive position around their wagons. The French-led force was defeated, and the loss made the situation inside besieged Orléans more difficult.
Joan of Arc arrived at the French court later that season and reached Orléans in late April. The battle is therefore an important prelude to her campaign, but Joan was not the commander of the French force in the Battle of Rouvray.
