Stede Bonnet’s pirate ship was named Revenge.
Bonnet purchased and outfitted the vessel in Barbados in 1717, using his personal wealth to begin a life at sea. The decision was highly unusual: most pirate captains gained ships through privateering, capture, or mutiny, whereas Bonnet reportedly entered piracy as a landowner with little practical maritime experience.
The Revenge later sailed alongside Edward Teach, or Blackbeard. Teach temporarily took control of Bonnet’s ship and crew, while Bonnet remained aboard in a reduced role. This association explains why accounts of the Revenge are sometimes mixed with accounts of Blackbeard’s flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge; they were different ships.
Bonnet regained command after Blackbeard abandoned him. He was captured near the Cape Fear River in 1718, tried in Charleston, and executed. The Revenge was therefore closely tied to Bonnet’s rise, his humiliation under Blackbeard, and his final attempt to return to piracy.
