What was the name of Roald Dahl’s home in Great Missenden?

The story behind the answer

Roald Dahl’s home in Great Missenden was called Gipsy House.

Dahl lived at Gipsy House in the Buckinghamshire village of Great Missenden from 1954 until his death in 1990. The house and its surrounding garden became closely associated with his writing life. He worked in a small writing hut in the garden, where he developed many of his children’s stories.

The setting is sometimes confused with the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre, which is also in Great Missenden but is a separate institution. The museum opened in 2005, long after Dahl had died, and occupies buildings in the village rather than serving as his former home.

Gipsy House was important to Dahl’s creative routine. He wrote in a particular chair, used familiar writing materials, and treated the hut as a private workspace. The house later became part of the literary history surrounding Dahl’s life and work.
