Ham was Noah’s son who appears in Genesis as the father of Canaan after the Flood. Genesis names Noah’s three sons as Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and later identifies Canaan as Ham’s son.
The family episode follows Noah’s planting of a vineyard and is one of the narrative’s post-Flood scenes. It introduces the relationships among Noah, his sons, and their descendants rather than describing the construction or voyage of the Ark itself.
Readers sometimes confuse Ham with Canaan because both names occur together in Genesis 9. Ham is the father, while Canaan is his son. Shem and Japheth are Noah’s other two sons, and later biblical genealogies develop separate descendant lines from all three.
