What was the name of Nintendo's first home console released outside Japan?
Answer
Nintendo Entertainment System
Answer
Nintendo Entertainment System
Nintendo's first home console released outside Japan was the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Nintendo launched the Family Computer, or Famicom, in Japan in 1983. For overseas markets, the company redesigned the hardware and released it as the Nintendo Entertainment System, commonly abbreviated NES. The North American launch began in selected markets in 1985 and expanded nationally in 1986.
The NES used a front-loading cartridge slot in its North American design and introduced a gray-and-black appearance that differed from the original Famicom. Nintendo also promoted accessories such as the Zapper and R.O.B. to position the system as an entertainment product rather than simply another game console.
The NES helped restore consumer confidence in North American console gaming after the 1983 crash. Its library included Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, and Metroid. The names Famicom and NES refer to related versions of the same hardware family, but the NES was Nintendo's first home console released outside Japan.
