The Arch Deluxe was McDonald’s short-lived premium burger launched in the United States in 1996.
McDonald’s positioned the Arch Deluxe as a more sophisticated burger aimed at adults rather than children. Its branding emphasized an adult taste profile, including a distinctive mustard-and-mayonnaise-style sauce and a potato-flavored bun. The campaign became one of the company’s most expensive product introductions at the time.
Despite the substantial advertising effort, the burger did not achieve the expected level of sales and was eventually discontinued in most markets. Its failure became a frequently cited example of the difficulty of changing a familiar mass-market brand while asking customers to pay for a more upscale image.
The name is sometimes confused with later McDonald’s premium burgers that used the word “Deluxe.” The Arch Deluxe was a specific 1996 product and campaign, not a general name for every higher-priced burger sold by the company.
