Mac Tonight was McDonald’s moon-headed mascot used in advertising beginning in 1986.
The character appeared in campaigns promoting McDonald’s late-night service and was recognizable for a crescent-moon head, sunglasses, and a tuxedo. The advertising used a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” linking the character to a sophisticated, nighttime mood rather than the child-focused style of McDonaldland.
Mac Tonight is sometimes described as a 1990s mascot because reruns and later references kept the character visible into that decade. His principal campaign, however, began in the 1980s. The character was retired after a legal dispute involving Bobby Darin’s estate over the adapted song.
