McDonald’s original speedy-service mascot was Speedee.
Speedee was a chef character used by McDonald’s before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known mascot. The character represented the Speedee Service System, the restaurant operating model developed by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant.
The Speedee Service System emphasized a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, standardized portions, and fast service. Speedee’s identity therefore connected the mascot directly to the brand promise of quick food rather than to a particular menu item.
Ronald McDonald later became the central advertising character, but Speedee did not disappear from the company’s earliest visual history. The character is sometimes confused with later McDonald’s figures such as the Hamburglar or Mayor McCheese, who belonged to the larger McDonaldland cast introduced in the early 1970s.
