What was the name of McDonald's original service system introduced by the McDonald brothers?

The story behind the answer

The McDonald brothers called their original fast-food operating model the Speedee Service System.

After opening their San Bernardino drive-in in 1940, Maurice and Richard McDonald redesigned the business around speed, consistency, and a small menu. They introduced the system in 1948 after temporarily closing the restaurant for changes. Food was prepared using standardized procedures, and the restaurant shifted toward hamburgers, fries, shakes, and counter service rather than a broad drive-in menu.

The name Speedee connected the system to an early McDonald’s character, Speedee, who was drawn as a chef with a hamburger-shaped head. That character served as an early visual symbol before Ronald McDonald and the later international brand system became dominant. Speedee is therefore both a branding reference and a description of the company’s operating philosophy.

The Speedee Service System influenced the modern quick-service restaurant model. Ray Kroc later recognized its commercial potential and helped turn the brothers’ local system into a much larger franchise network.
