What was the name of McDonald’s original service concept, promoted before the chain became globally famous?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original service concept was called the Speedee Service System. The McDonald brothers introduced it at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant in 1948 as a faster, simplified alternative to traditional drive-in service.

The system reduced the menu and standardized food preparation. Customers could receive hamburgers, fries, and drinks quickly because kitchen tasks were organized for speed and consistency. This operating idea became an important foundation for the modern fast-food model.

The name “Speedee” was also represented by an early chef-like mascot and logo. That character predates Ronald McDonald, but the service system itself was the business innovation behind the restaurant’s early identity.

Ray Kroc later expanded McDonald’s through franchising and helped turn the concept into a nationwide and international chain. The Speedee Service System should not be confused with a later slogan or with the Golden Arches, which became the more dominant visual symbol of the brand.
