McDonald’s original mascot was Speedee, a smiling chef used on the company’s early logo.
Speedee appeared after Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their San Bernardino, California, restaurant around a faster self-service system in 1948. The mascot’s name referred to the restaurant’s emphasis on speed and standardized preparation.
The early logo featured Speedee beside the words “McDonald’s Famous Hamburgers.” This branding came before the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant visual symbol. Speedee was eventually replaced by the arches in the early 1960s.
Speedee is sometimes confused with later McDonald’s characters such as Ronald McDonald, the Hamburglar, or Mayor McCheese. Unlike those characters, Speedee represented the restaurant’s original speed-service concept and was primarily used as a logo figure.
