Speedee was McDonald's original corporate mascot, depicted as a chef in the company's early restaurant branding.
The character represented the McDonald brothers' Speedee Service System, which emphasized a limited menu, standardized preparation, and rapid service. Speedee was commonly shown as a chef-like figure with a hamburger-shaped head, linking the mascot to the restaurant's food and operating method.
Speedee predates Ronald McDonald and belonged to an earlier stage of the brand's history. As McDonald's expanded and developed a more family-oriented advertising identity, Ronald became the better-known public character. The older Speedee imagery was gradually replaced, although the name survived in historical references to the service system.
Speedee is often confused with the Golden Arches because both were early identifiers of the chain. They served different purposes: Speedee was a character and symbol of fast service, while the arches developed from restaurant architecture into the central visual logo.
