McDonald’s original chef-hat logo character was named Speedee.
Speedee represented the Speedee Service System introduced by the McDonald brothers at their San Bernardino restaurant in 1948. The character was a smiling chef, and the name communicated the restaurant’s emphasis on fast, standardized food preparation.
Speedee appeared in McDonald’s early branding before the company adopted the Golden Arches as its dominant visual symbol. The character is sometimes confused with later McDonaldland figures, but Speedee belonged to the restaurant’s earlier service-oriented identity rather than the fantasy advertising world created in the 1970s.
The Speedee name also reflects an important stage in McDonald’s history: the business was initially marketed primarily around speed and efficiency, while later branding focused more strongly on family experiences, recognizable characters, and the arches logo.
