What was the name of McDonald’s original cartoon mascot, shown as a speeding hamburger?

The story behind the answer

Speedee was McDonald’s original cartoon mascot, depicted as a speeding hamburger.

The character represented the Speedee Service System introduced by the McDonald brothers in 1948. That system reorganized the restaurant around quick, standardized food preparation, and Speedee’s name communicated the central promise: customers would receive their food rapidly.

Speedee appeared in early McDonald’s signs and promotional material before Ronald McDonald became the company’s best-known advertising character. The mascot was not the same as the later clown figure, and it should not be confused with Speedy Gonzales, the Warner Bros. cartoon character.

As McDonald’s advertising changed during the 1960s, Ronald McDonald and a larger cast of characters increasingly dominated the brand. Even so, Speedee is an important part of the company’s visual history because he connected the logo and advertising directly to the restaurant’s original service innovation.
