What was the name of McDonald’s original 1948 service concept, built around fast preparation?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original 1948 service concept was called the Speedee Service System.

Richard and Maurice McDonald introduced the system when they redesigned their San Bernardino, California, restaurant around a limited menu, standardized preparation, and quick counter service. The name connected the restaurant’s identity with speed, an important selling point in the emerging American drive-in market.

The system later became an important part of McDonald’s historical branding, even though the Speedee name did not remain the company’s main public identity. The brothers’ operating ideas influenced the restaurant format that Ray Kroc later expanded through franchising.

Speedee Service System is sometimes confused with Speedee, the early hamburger mascot. They are related pieces of the early brand, but one was the service method and the other was a character used in restaurant imagery and advertising.
