What was the name of McDonald's original 1948 mascot, a speed-themed chef who represented fast service?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's original 1948 mascot was Speedee, a speed-themed chef who represented fast service.

Speedee appeared when Richard and Maurice McDonald reorganized their San Bernardino restaurant around the Speedee Service System. The system emphasized a limited menu, assembly-line preparation, and quick customer service. A chef character with a hamburger-shaped head helped turn the idea of speed into a recognizable visual identity.

Speedee was eventually replaced by Ronald McDonald as the company’s best-known mascot. The change reflected McDonald’s growing focus on family marketing and children. The character should not be confused with Speedy Gonzales, the Warner Bros. cartoon character, or with later McDonaldland figures such as Grimace and Mayor McCheese. The golden arches also became more important than Speedee as McDonald’s expanded internationally.
