McDonald's moonwalking mascot and campaign character was named Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight debuted in 1986 advertising aimed at promoting McDonald's evening business. The character wore sunglasses, had a crescent-moon head and sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” making nighttime dining the central branding idea.
Mac Tonight is sometimes remembered as a permanent McDonaldland character, but he was primarily an advertising campaign figure. The campaign was especially associated with the United States and became recognizable for its surreal moon imagery and musical presentation.
The character also generated later controversy because internet users connected his appearance with unrelated imagery. That association was not part of McDonald's original campaign, whose purpose was simply to make dinner and late-night visits distinctive.
