McDonald's moonwalking advertising character in the 1980s was called Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 as part of a campaign promoting McDonald's evening business. The character wore dark sunglasses, had a crescent-moon-shaped head, and performed a version of “Mack the Knife,” changing the song's emphasis to “Mac Tonight.”
The campaign gave McDonald's a distinctive nighttime identity at a time when the company was trying to encourage more customers to visit after work and later in the day. Mac Tonight's visual design made the character easy to identify in television commercials and promotional material.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with McDonald's regular mascots, such as Ronald McDonald. Unlike Ronald, Mac Tonight was created mainly for a specific advertising campaign and was strongly associated with evening dining.
