McDonald's introduced the moon-headed singing mascot Mac Tonight in 1986.
Mac Tonight was created for a campaign aimed at promoting McDonald's evening business. The character had a crescent-moon head, wore formal evening clothing, and performed a version of “Mack the Knife,” giving the advertisements a distinctly musical and nighttime identity.
Mac Tonight is often confused with McDonald's long-running character mascots, including Mayor McCheese and Officer Big Mac. Unlike those characters, Mac Tonight was built around a moon image and a performance associated with evening dining.
The campaign became especially recognizable because of its visual design and musical hook. Although Mac Tonight was not a permanent replacement for Ronald McDonald, the character remains one of the most distinctive short-lived figures in McDonald's branding history.
