McDonald’s moon-headed mascot from its 1980s advertising was Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 as a character for McDonald’s evening and late-night marketing. He had a crescent-moon head, wore sunglasses and formal clothing, and sang a version of “Mack the Knife.” The campaign promoted McDonald’s as a place to visit after dark rather than focusing only on daytime meals.
The character became especially recognizable because of the combination of the moon design, piano performance, and altered song. His advertising run was later curtailed after a legal dispute involving the original song’s rights, although the character remained a notable part of McDonald’s branding history.
Mac Tonight is distinct from McDonaldland characters such as Mayor McCheese and Captain Crook. Those figures belonged to the earlier fantasy campaign, while Mac Tonight was primarily a musical nighttime advertising character.
