McDonald’s moon-headed character featured in 1980s advertising was Mac Tonight.
Mac Tonight was introduced in 1986 as a character promoting McDonald’s evening business. He had a crescent-moon head, wore formal clothing, and sang a parody associated with the standard “Mack the Knife” melody. The unusual design made him visually distinct from the McDonaldland cast.
The campaign targeted dinner and late-night visits rather than only children’s daytime meals. Mac Tonight therefore represented a different branding strategy: using a memorable entertainment character to associate McDonald’s with an occasion of the day.
Mac Tonight is sometimes confused with Grimace or other McDonaldland figures, but his moon-shaped head is the defining feature. He was primarily an advertising character of the 1980s, not one of McDonald’s original mascots.
