Mac Tonight was the name of McDonald's moon-faced singing mascot used in advertising from 1986.
The character was created for a campaign promoting McDonald's evening business. Mac Tonight had a crescent-moon head, wore sunglasses and formal clothing, and sang a version of the song “Mack the Knife.” His visual style made him noticeably different from the colorful McDonaldland characters aimed primarily at children.
The campaign was designed to associate McDonald's with dinner and late-evening visits. Mac Tonight commercials used a lounge-singer presentation, turning the restaurant brand into part of an evening entertainment setting. The character became especially associated with the late 1980s.
Mac Tonight is sometimes mistakenly treated as a permanent member of the McDonaldland cast. In practice, he was chiefly a campaign character tied to a particular advertising period and the push to increase nighttime sales.
