Mac Tonight was McDonald's moon-faced lounge-singer mascot from its 1980s advertising campaign.
The character appeared in commercials promoting McDonald's evening business. Mac Tonight wore sunglasses and sang a parody of the popular song “Mack the Knife,” using a stylized crescent-moon head as his defining visual feature.
The campaign was created for McDonald's by the advertising agency Needham Harper Steers. Its original focus was encouraging customers to visit restaurants at night, rather than presenting Mac Tonight as a permanent member of McDonaldland.
Mac Tonight is often confused with McDonaldland characters such as Mayor McCheese or Officer Big Mac. Those characters belonged to the chain's earlier fantasy world, while Mac Tonight was primarily a music-based advertising mascot. The character was especially associated with the late 1980s.
