Mac Tonight was the name of McDonald’s moon-faced character used to promote the brand in the 1980s.
The character appeared in a major advertising campaign beginning in 1986. Mac Tonight had a crescent-moon head, wore formal evening clothing, and sang a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife,” linking McDonald’s with nighttime dining and a stylish musical presentation.
The campaign was created to encourage evening visits, an important branding goal because McDonald’s had traditionally been associated more strongly with daytime meals. Mac Tonight’s visual design made the campaign immediately recognizable and separate from Ronald McDonald’s family-oriented image.
Mac Tonight is sometimes mistaken for a permanent member of the McDonald’s character universe. In reality, he was primarily an advertising character tied to a specific campaign. His name also should not be confused with the company’s later slogans or with the unrelated Big Mac product.
