Mac Tonight was McDonald’s moon-faced character introduced in 1986 for a night-time advertising campaign.
The character wore dark sunglasses and sang a rewritten version of Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife,” changing the refrain to “Mac Tonight.” The campaign promoted McDonald’s as an evening destination and was especially associated with restaurants serving dinner and late-night customers.
Mac Tonight stood apart from McDonaldland’s fantasy characters because the campaign used a more stylized, music-centered identity. The crescent-moon head, sunglasses, piano imagery, and lounge-style presentation gave the advertising a distinctive visual and musical tone.
The campaign is sometimes remembered as a permanent mascot, but Mac Tonight was primarily a promotional advertising character. Its use declined after legal action concerning the song adaptation, and the character is not part of McDonald’s regular global branding in the way Ronald McDonald or the Golden Arches are.
