What was the name of McDonald's late-night advertising character introduced in 1986?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's late-night advertising character introduced in 1986 was Mac Tonight.

Mac Tonight was depicted as a person with a crescent-moon head, dark sunglasses, and a formal dinner jacket. The campaign promoted McDonald's evening business and used a rewritten version of Bobby Darin's 1959 song “Mack the Knife,” with lyrics about dining at McDonald's at night.

The character was created for a United States advertising campaign by the Los Angeles agency Needham Harper Steers. Actor Doug Jones played Mac Tonight in many of the commercials before becoming better known for later film and television roles.

Mac Tonight is sometimes mistaken for a permanent McDonald's mascot because of the character's memorable visual design. In fact, he was primarily an advertising campaign character associated with a specific late-night marketing push, and the campaign was later discontinued.
