Captain Crook was McDonald’s fish-themed character associated with Filet-O-Fish advertising.
Captain Crook belonged to the broader group of McDonaldland characters used in McDonald’s advertising and promotional materials. His pirate-style design connected him with seafood imagery and made him a natural spokesman for the Filet-O-Fish sandwich, which had been introduced in the 1960s as a menu option for customers who did not eat meat.
The character is less widely remembered than Ronald McDonald, Grimace, or the Hamburglar. That difference reflects the changing role of McDonaldland characters in McDonald’s marketing: some were used broadly, while others supported particular products or seasonal promotions.
Captain Crook is often confused with the Hamburglar because both characters were portrayed as mischievous figures. Their product associations were different, however. Captain Crook’s theme was fish and piracy, while the Hamburglar’s recurring story centered on trying to steal hamburgers.
