Speedee was the name of McDonald's first restaurant mascot, a chef-like figure used before Ronald McDonald. He was introduced in 1948 to represent the restaurant's Speedee Service System and its emphasis on rapid preparation.
The McDonald brothers created their service system after redesigning their San Bernardino, California, restaurant around a limited menu and specialized production. Speedee's imagery communicated that the restaurant could deliver a consistent meal quickly.
The mascot was part of a broader early identity that included the restaurant's original hamburger-focused menu and the use of service speed as a competitive advantage. As McDonald's grew under Ray Kroc, its branding became more family-oriented and visually standardized.
Ronald McDonald eventually became the dominant mascot, while characters such as the Hamburglar belonged to the later McDonaldland era. Speedee therefore represents the company's early operational brand, not its later cartoon universe.
