Speedee was McDonald’s first restaurant chain logo mascot, a chef-like character used before Ronald McDonald.
Speedee appeared in the early McDonald’s branding after the company’s original restaurant opened in San Bernardino, California, in 1940. The character was associated with speed and efficient service, ideas that became central to the restaurant’s identity as the McDonald brothers developed their streamlined operating system.
The name reflected the business’s emphasis on fast preparation and service. Speedee was not the same character as the later Hamburglar, Grimace, or Ronald McDonald, who belonged to subsequent advertising eras.
Speedee is also easy to confuse with the “Speedee Service System,” the McDonald brothers’ method for preparing food quickly and consistently. The mascot and the service system shared the same speed-focused branding, but they were different things.
