Speedee was McDonald's first mascot, introduced with the restaurant's Speedee Service System.
The McDonald brothers opened their redesigned San Bernardino restaurant in 1948 with a simplified menu and a production-line method for serving food quickly. Speedee, a chef-like character, represented that emphasis on speed and consistency.
The character appeared on early McDonald's signs and packaging, often alongside the phrase “Speedee Service System.” This branding came before Ronald McDonald and the later group of colorful McDonaldland characters.
People sometimes assume Ronald McDonald was the company's original mascot because he became much more famous. Ronald debuted in the 1960s, while Speedee belonged to the earlier postwar period. McDonald's eventually replaced Speedee as its primary mascot as the brand developed a broader family-oriented advertising style.
