Speedee was McDonald's first major mascot character in its 1950s branding.
The character was a smiling chef used to symbolize the Speedee Service System, the operating model developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald. Speedee's name emphasized the restaurant's promise of quick service.
As McDonald's expanded, its marketing priorities changed. Ronald McDonald became the dominant mascot in the 1960s, while later campaigns introduced the McDonaldland cast and more elaborate family-oriented storytelling.
Speedee is often overlooked because the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald became much more famous. He remains important, however, because his image linked the earliest McDonald's identity to speed and standardized service.
