Speedee was McDonald's first mascot before the chain adopted the Golden Arches as its main logo.
Speedee was introduced in 1948 to represent the Speedee Service System developed by Richard and Maurice McDonald. The mascot's chef-like appearance and hamburger head communicated the restaurant's focus on fast, consistent preparation.
As McDonald's expanded, the company increasingly relied on the Golden Arches as its central visual identifier. Later advertising added Ronald McDonald and the McDonaldland characters, shifting attention away from Speedee. This is why many modern audiences know the arches and clown but have never seen the original mascot.
The wording “first mascot” refers to McDonald's early branding, not the first mascot at every individual restaurant or in every country. Speedee is also distinct from the restaurant architecture that inspired the later Golden Arches logo.
