Speedee was McDonald’s first major advertising mascot, used before Ronald McDonald.
Speedee was depicted as a chef-like character and represented the speed of the McDonald brothers’ streamlined restaurant system. The name echoed the emphasis on fast service that became central to McDonald’s identity after the restaurant’s 1948 reorganization.
The character appeared in early signage, packaging, and promotional materials. Speedee was also connected visually with the restaurant’s early branding, before the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald became the company’s dominant public symbols.
Speedee is often confused with the later McDonaldland characters. Ronald McDonald was introduced in the 1960s, while Speedee belonged to the earlier phase of the company’s visual identity and advertising history.
